We had a fabulous time at yesterday’s “Why bother with diversity?” event in Mumbai, with the Chartered Insurance Institute, Raheja QBE, General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re) and DiveIn.
Usha Ramaswamy, GIC Re, opened the event with some shocking facts for example in 2016 Women in India only had 16% of leadership positions.
Inga Beale, Lloyds, then addressed the attendees with a short key note emphasizing the importance of diversity as it fuels growth and stimulates innovation.
Sian Fisher, CII, followed with a short presentation about the Insuring Women’s Future’s campaign, stating that Empathy, Education and Engagement are crucial for increasing diversity and that we need to act as a united profession in order to get the culture change we require.
Our celebrity speaker was Nandita Das, Film Producer and Actor. Nandita explained how so often we are defined by the identities we are born with – the identities we have no control over. We all have multiple identities and these should’t define us as individuals or professionals.
After a short break our panel discussion commenced, with panellists Usha Ramawamy, Sian Fisher, Farzana Chowdhury ACII (UK) and Praveen Gupta moderated by Barbara Schonhofer. A live stream of our panel can be found on our twitter page @inssuperclub.
The event concluded with a presentation from Sheetal Mehta who shared the story of Nanhi Kali, founded by Anand Mahindra in 1996, which strives to improve female education throughout India. More details can be found here.
Thank you to all those who attended or contributed in any way, shape or form and made it such a success. We look forward to returning again next year!
